Our community is changing

Howick Historical Village showed us what life was like here in our community 150 years ago. Life has changed a lot from those tent days, when we all made our own butter, and had chooks running around. Check out the technology counter above. What will life be like in another 150 years? What about in only 5 years time?

Communities constantly change. Is ours getting better or worse? What are YOUR thoughts?

When I think about all the technology that connects people (like blogs, facebook, aeroplanes, telephones) ... I feel like my community is getting bigger and better because I can stay close to my friends who live on the other side of the world.

BUT ... maybe society is getting worse at the same time because not very many people sit down at the table to eat dinner together, and people feel lonely. Maybe we feel more alone than ever before, even though we have all this technology that can connect us with other people.

I think our community needs to start playing with their kids outside, and stop using computers so much, because it can also hurt the environment. Then we could spread out some energy instead of just writing, playing games and then we'd actually learn about life.

I think it's getting better and worse. Some things are cool, but the future will be cool as well.

I think our community has lost a lot of togetherness. Everybody seems so busy doing their own things they don't always have the time to spend together helping each other, visiting and playing games together.
But I do think modern technology is helpful in a lot of ways cutting down the distances and making it easier to communicate with people all around the world and helping us find out useful information quickly.

I think families and friends are still an important part of our communities. Modern technology lets us keep in touch with people all around the world which is wonderful!
However, sometimes we get so busy in life that sometimes we forget that little things are important. I love getting a phone call or text from a friend.
In the future we can choose to use technology to help us do so many things. There will be new gadgets that haven't even been thought of yet.
Love your website - Keep up the great work

I think it is getting worse because all the people are getting older, and everyone is getting beards. Nobody will be getting water or drinks of beer, because all of the things are running out. All of the trees are being chopped down, and going on fire.

Our community is getting better. But there are too many cars on the road and it takes too long to drive to Waimokoia.

I agree with Kaitlyn that we need to look after the planet. It's getting worse because of all the rubbish from our factoties, but we're getting better at thinking about it, and changing our habits. I just hope we're not too slow!

I like how Matthew is optimistic that the future will be cool. I back up Kaitlyn and Michael because of their comments about how it's important to take care of the environment. Here's a question - would you prefer to buy a new cell phone that was cool, or environmentally friendly (and maybe costs a bit more than the cool one)?

Our community lifestyle today has change alot.I agree with Kaitlyn going out to parks or going for a ride on your bikes as family.
Avoid spending to much time inside in front of the tv,psp, wii etc. Family time and knowing your neighbour helps you have a safe neighbourhood.

I think that technology makes the world a smaller place and we can learn and talk to new people and friends and families who do not live close by.(like me talking to everyone from Waimokoia from Sydney. However, I think this has meant that we now find it easier to send an email or text rather than phoning or calling around to see our friends and family. Also sometimes we spend so much of our free time on the computers, PS3 and Xbox, that we don't go outside and play and enjoy nature.

I think that modern technology is great for visiting new places and meeting new people. It also makes it easier to stay in touch. At the same time, I think it has made some people less able to communicate in person through talking and interacting which has an effect on their social skills.

  14. This is such an interesting and thought provoking post! On the whole I think that technology is a positive for communities but like all things it requires balance. I consider myself lucky to be able to use facebook to keep in touch with my friends and family who live far away. The negative to this is that sometimes I spend too much time playing games on facebook when I should be doing other things!
